Are you a data ‘all rounder’?

if so we would be keen to speak to you.

We are looking for a dedicated and talented team member to join the data team at DeadHappy. This will include playing a key role in further developing our recently built data platform and being an expert on our database design and how our various applications interact with it. Whilst the role requires a data engineer at its core, we really need an all rounder who is curious about knowing the functional side of our data and understanding how it can be used to drive value through the business. You will be somebody who is happy to get stuck into your own areas of focus but also get involved in things outside of your specific experience and functional expertise when needed. We expect you to have a sense of curiosity to learn how the whole business works to allow you to know where to best apply your skills. We may occasionally ask you to run the odd quick and dirty query or create a report on the fly.

You will have proven experience in data technologies, including implementing and running cloud based data platforms and you must be able to apply yourself to a startup environment. We want you to work with our talented and passionate team to build a data platform that will support our next growth phase (and beyond) by delivering the data needed to provide the team with insight for decision making and for creating outstanding customer experiences. You will have a unique opportunity to get involved early to shape both the team and the technology.

It is a given that you have a deep working knowledge of more foundational data technologies (e.g. SQL, Data Warehousing). In previous roles you will have designed, implemented and operated high quality and robust cloud based data platforms / applications utilising one of more technologies like Kafka, AWS Redshift, Snowflake, BigQuery or Spark and languages like Python and Java. You will have experience in integrating and building reports with BI tools like Google Data Suite, Tableau or Power BI. Our Data Platform is built around Google Cloud Platform (BigQuery) and Snowplow, and we are someway through implementing an event based architecture (based on AWS EventBridge) so experience in those technologies will come in handy.

Pair programming, continuous integration and delivery, test driven development and data quality should be second nature to you. You are most definitely an advocate of delivering at pace using Agile and Lean ways of working and you will be happy to join the daily stand-ups. The letters GDPR don’t scare you and you believe strongly that our customer’s data is sacred.

You have a real passion for using data to solve customer and business problems by working proactively and collaboratively with those around you, in particular the engineering team and data analysts.

Technical competencies and experience

  • Expertise (3-5 yrs experience) as a data engineer (or equivalent), designing and implementing cloud based data platforms. Which means you
    • Understand and have experience with more traditional technologies including SQL and Data Warehousing, OLAP etc. Have excellent knowledge of languages like SQL, Java, Python
    • Have worked with one or more stream processing technologies like Kafka, K-Streams, KSQL, AWS Kinesis, StreamSets etc.
    • Have worked with technologies like Redshift, BigQuery, Snowflake etc.
    • Have worked with reporting tools like Athena, Tableau, PowerBI, Google Data Suite
    • Our current platform is based on Google Cloud Platform, using BigQuery and Snowplow and we ingest events from AWS EventBridge so strong knowledge of these would be advantageous
  • A good understanding of GDPR and ensuring the pragmatic implementation of privacy by design
  • Experience and a passion for clean data, through built in data quality, using methods like automation, Test Driven Development and Pair Programming
  • Experience and a strong focus on continuous integration and delivery
  • Strong working knowledge of Agile and lean methods
  • Experience debugging and fixing production issues under pressure

Non technical competencies and experience

  • A disposition to keep things simple and place the customer at the centre your thinking
  • Problem-solving skills that balance pragmatic technology choices with innovation, to solve customer problems and business needs
  • A passion for data and a determination to hold us all accountable for always treating customer data with the utmost respect (in line with GDPR principles)
  • A collaborator who can work independently but prioritises the team over self and leaves your ego at the door
  • Willing to get your hands dirty to unblock and enable the whole team
  • Thrives working in an agile / lean and an ability and enjoyment of working at pace
  • A healthy tolerance for ambiguity that comes with fast paced digital workplaces and start-ups
  • A built in motivation to keep yourself up to date with emerging technology and to share knowledge with your colleagues

Why work at DeadHappy?

Working at DeadHappy won’t be for everyone. We’re a new business and have a start-up environment highly motivated and focused on growing our product, our tech platforms and hitting product-market fit. That means getting stuck into what you need to do but also getting involved in things outside of your experience and functional expertise.

Whilst we have a pretty cool office, we don’t have slides or sleep pods and you’ll more than likely be working on a scaffolding board (with the rest of us), so if you have a need for home comforts, this probably isn’t the place for you.

It will be an adventure, we’ll all learn a huge amount along the way, and the best news is that we’ll also pay you some money.

If you are ambitious and looking to progress and want to create something different and better in the Life Insurance and Death Services space, we have big plans for growth and are well funded, so there will be plenty of opportunities for developing a career in a range of directions for the committed candidate.
