What is Near Death cover?

Near Death insurance pays out a tax-free lump sum if you're diagnosed with a nasty illness during the term of your plan. It's not the same as life insurance, which pays money to your loved ones only if you die. It's similar to critical illness insurance, read on to find out more about our near death cover.

Similar to Critical Illness cover, our Near-Death insurance pays out when you get ill with something really nasty.’


When you apply for life insurance with us, depending on your answers to the questions, we might give you the option of getting a price for near death insurance. You’ll need to answer some extra questions, but if the Suits say yes it's your choice; Life Insurance plus Near Death Insurance OR just Life Insurance.

If you opt to take out a life and a near-death plan with us and you get a really nasty illness, we'll pay out 50% of your cover amount and then the other 50% if you die after that. If you die and you haven’t already claimed for a really nasty illness - we will pay the whole of your cover amount.

How much will Near Death Cover Cost?

Probably a lot less than you thought, for example as of Nov 2020, it would cost a 30 year old, non smoker with £100K cover just an additional £3.23 to add on this cover.

Which serious illnesses are covered under this near death plan?

We cover four common major nasty illnesses for our near death plan:

Cancer

Not all cancers are equal, so we can only payout if it’s one which is not so easily treatable and is likely to have a bigger impact on your life, therefore we can only payout for cancer that has progressed to prognostic stage 2 or equivalent on TNM classification. Find out more.

Serious Heart Attack

A heart attack which leads to a permanent reduction in your heart’s effectiveness (Measured by an ejection fraction of 45% or below at least one month after the attack). Find out more.

Serious Stroke

A stroke which leaves you with permanent disability or impairment to your nervous system (Measured as a level 2 or above on the Modified Rankin Scale at least one month after the stroke). Find out more.

Multiple Sclerosis

MS which results in persisting clinical impairment of motor or sensory function (Supported by findings of objective evidence on MRI). Find out more.

Who can make a claim?

If you get a really nasty illness and you’ve got our near-death insurance then one of your friends or family can get in touch with us, or you can do it yourself if you’re well enough. We’ll ask them for your name, DOB and address; who they are and their relationship to you. Our claims team will let them know if we need anything else.

What information do we need to pay a claim?

Firstly, we’ll need to know your personal details (name, DOB, address) to access your account and check your plan is active. If you get a really nasty illness and you’ve got our near-death insurance then we’ll need to see evidence that shows your illness meets our definitions We may also need to see full medical records to check that you didn’t lie about your health.

What type of cover is right for me?

That’s entirely up to you. We can’t give financial advice, but what we can do is give you as much information as possible to hopefully help you make the right choice for you.

How do I get a price for Near Death cover?

Do I need insurance, in case I get really ill, to get a mortgage?

You might want to, but you don’t need to, no.
